چکیده

Simulation of the system behavior of hydrate-bearing geologic media involves solving fully coupled massand heat-balance equations. In this study, we develop a domain decomposition approach for large-scale gas hydrate simulations with coarse-granularity parallel computation. This approach partitions a simulation domain into small subdomains. The full model domain, consisting of discrete subdomains, is still simulated simultaneously by using multiple processes/processors. Each processor is dedicated to following tasks of the partitioned subdomain: updating thermophysical properties, assembling massand energy-balance equations, solving linear equation systems, and performing various other local computations. The linearized equation systems are solved in parallel with a parallel linear solver, using an efficient interprocess communication scheme. This new domain decomposition approach has been implemented into the TOUGH+HYDRATE code and has demonstrated excellent speedup and good scalability. In this paper, we will demonstrate applications for the new approach in simulating field-scale models for gas production from gas-hydrate deposits.

Efficient Parallel Simulation of CO2 Geologic Sequestration in Saline Aquifers

An efficient parallel simulator for large-scale, long-term CO2 geologic sequestration in saline aquifers has been developed. The parallel simulator is a three-dimensional, fully implicit model that solves large, sparse linear systems arising from discretization of the partial differential equations for mass and energy balance in porous and fractured media. The simulator is based on the ECO2N mo...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Multiscale model reduction techniques for ows in high-contrast porous media and applications

The development of numerical algorithms for modeling ow processes in large-scale highly heterogeneous formations is very challenging because the properties of natural geologic porous formations (e.g., permeability) display high variability levels and complex spatial correlation structures, which span a rich hierarchy of length scales. Thus, it is usually necessary to resolve a wide range of len...

Radionuclide Transport Calculations from High-level Long-lived Radioactive Waste Disposal in Deep Clayey Geologic Formation toward Adjacent Aquifers

In the context of high-level nuclear waste repository safety calculations, the modeling of radionuclide migration is of first importance. Three dimensional radionuclide transport calculations in geological repository need to describe objects of the meter scale embedded in geologic layer formations of kilometer extension. A complete and refined spatial description would end up with at least mesh...

Response of Oceanic Hydrate-Bearing Sediments to Thermal Stresses

In this study we evaluate the response of oceanic subsurface systems to thermal stresses caused by the flow of warm fluids through non-insulated well systems crossing hydrate-bearing sediments. Heat transport from warm fluids, originating from deeper reservoirs under production, into the geologic media can cause dissociation of the gas hydrates. The objective of this study is to determine wheth...
